THE RIDESA

The Interuniversity Network for the Development of Sugarcane and Energy was formed through a technical cooperation agreement between ten Federal Universities. Thus, RIDESA's research activities are developed and shared among all universities, encouraging the exchange of information, knowledge, and results. This significantly increases the capacity and national reach of research and innovation results. Therefore, the Network operates nationwide and is currently the main center for sugarcane research within the Federal Government.

The nomenclature for sugarcane varieties in the RIDESA network uses the acronym RB (Republic of Brazil), which is registered with the Germplasm Committee of the International Society of Sugarcane Technologists (ISSCT) . The numbering is followed by the year of crossing and then the code for the respective university, which represents the location of variety selection, as detailed in Table 1 below.

To create these new varieties, RIDESA has 79 research bases, including University Laboratories, Crossing Stations, Experimental Stations and Selection Bases, the latter being conducted in partnership with companies in the sugarcane sector.

RIDESA has produced 75 cultivars since 1990, which, combined with the cultivars approved by PLANALSUCAR, total 94 RB varieties, produced over 45 years of sugarcane research. Currently, the network accounts for 68% of the total sugarcane cultivation area in Brazil.
